For All Man Kind
One of our inspiration of the Cabrini Art House project is the revitalization of William Walker's celebrated "For All Mankind" mural. Created in 1972 by the renowned African American artist, the mural, much like the neighborhood itself, faced whitewashing in the mid-2010s. Restoring this significant work is crucial to the Art House's mission, underscoring a commitment to reclaiming and celebrating the cultural heritage and history of the community.

Originally built as an Episcopal church, this brick Gothic Revival building featured pointed-arch windows, a steeply pitched roof, and a prominent cross-topped façade. It would be become a center piece of Cabrini.

William "Bill" Walker: Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1927, William “Bill” Walker became a pioneering Chicago muralist and a leader in the community art movement. Through works like the Wall of Respect, he used public art to honor Black history, pride, resistance, and neighborhood memory.

1942 -1962
Built in stages over two decades, the Cabrini-Green public housing complex grew from the original Frances Cabrini rowhouses into a sprawling community of mid- and high-rise apartment buildings.

1971- 1974
Artist William Walker created For All Mankind, transforming the church with murals across its exterior façade and portions of its interior. The artwork celebrated Black history, community, and a shared vision of humanity.

2004
William Walker’s monumental interior murals was painted over despite efforts to preserve it. The artwork portrayed Black families, community life, industry, motherhood, and fatherhood, helping earn the church the nickname “Chicago’s Sistine Chapel.” In December 2015, Walker’s celebrated exterior mural, All of Mankind, was also whitewashed as the building was prepared for sale.

1995-2011
Demolition of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green high-rises began in 1995 and concluded in 2011. The final tower, at 1230 N. Burling Street, began coming down on March 30, 2011.

Today
Vacant for over 20 years, the church remains a rare Cabrini-Green landmark awaiting restoration as the future Cabrini Art House.
